Why did EDJY choose resin instead of metal?
At EDJY, we redesigned the nail cutter from the ground up and part of that process was examining the materials traditionally used. We carefully selected materials that have proven performance and are specialized for our design rather than relying on industry norms. EDJY uses a 60+ HRC martensitic stainless tool-steel blade paired with a high-performance, engineering-grade resin that is primarily used in under-the-hood automotive manufacturing as a metal replacement. We knew we needed to remove the possibility of our blade ever contacting another piece of metal, and resin was the obvious choice for durability and to achieve the ergonomic properties of the design. We tested the resin beyond 150,000 cycles with basically no wear and no change in properties. The precision-molded resin is part of what makes EDJY’s design possible, allowing the device to contain the clippings and maintain the exact tolerances that keep the blade, blade stop, and body aligned. For us, resin isn’t a downgrade from metal — it’s a deliberate engineering choice.
Does the EDJY blade cut against the resin?
Short answer — no. EDJY’s sharp cutting edge never cuts into or against the resin body. EDJY’s patented (U.S. Patent Nº 12016444) blade stop prevents the cutting edge from ever striking against any surface during normal use.
How does the resin protect the EDJY blade?
Traditional nail clippers dull over time as a result of consistent metal-on-metal contact. The design of the resin body that houses the EDJY blade keeps it in a fixed position, and the blade stop ensures it doesn’t bottom out into the base. This design means nothing wears, which is why we stand behind our lifetime warranty.
How durable is EDJY’s resin body?
It’s been tested over 150,000 cycles, so it’s safe to say that it’s pretty resilient. The material is also corrosion-proof, impervious to chemicals, and UV-protected (we also only use .5oz of resin in each device — about half the plastic in a soda bottle). This longevity is part of our story — we wanted to create an alternative to a commodity product that gets worn out and thrown away by the hundreds of thousands every day. All of EDJY’s products are designed to last a lifetime, which is why we focus so much on the durability of the materials we use.
The takeaway
EDJY uses a high-performance resin because it enables us to build a precision-engineered device that feels good in the hand. The device’s sharp cutting edge never cuts into or against that resin, thanks to our patented blade stop. Tested beyond 150,000 cycles and backed by a lifetime warranty, EDJY is designed to replace an everyday product with a tool you can keep for life.
